The Path to High Performance: Mastering the Basics, Eliminating Excuses, and Designing Your Future - Part 3

Welcome back to the highly anticipated third part of my high performance blog series. If you haven't had the chance to read the first two parts, I highly recommend going back and immersing yourself in the valuable insights they offer. Trust me, you won't regret it. Now, let's dive into the icing on the cake - part three. In week one, we explored the transformative power of falling in love with the process of pursuing our goals. We emphasized the significance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who not only keep us from becoming stagnant but also serve as a constant source of motivation. Furthermore, we delved into the three essential types of people that should compose our inner circle. However, as we embark on our personal growth journey, it's crucial to acknowledge that this circle will inevitably evolve. In week two, we shifted our focus to stress and how we can effectively manage it. And now, in week three, we will continue to empower ourselves by taking control of the controllables. Are you ready? Let's get started.

Get ready, because what I'm about to share with you is game-changing. When it comes to things we can't control, the easiest and most effective approach is to let go and redirect our focus towards the things within our control. This shift in mindset will propel us forward, as trying to control the uncontrollable can be overwhelming and draining. It's already a full-time job to manage our efforts and attitudes, so worrying about external factors is unnecessary. This doesn't mean we lack empathy or compassion for those experiencing significant trauma (the big T). It's about taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, as we discussed last week. Let's turn the challenges and unpleasant aspects of life into an opportunity for growth and fuel to become the person we aspire to be. Remember to give yourself grace because perfection is unattainable. Each individual is on a unique journey, and all we can do is apply the knowledge we gain and strive to be our best moving forward.

Now, let's explore what it takes to excel in any endeavor. Through my research, I've discovered that a commitment to mastering the fundamentals during the unseen hours is key to performing at a high level in any area of life. It entails working on the basics when nobody is watching until you achieve a certain level of mastery. Most people are unaware of the time and effort athletes invest off the field or court. While spectators only witness the game, it's what happens during those unseen hours that determines the execution of the game. The unseen hours and our actions when nobody is watching play a significant role in our success.

Another crucial aspect is doing the best we can with what we have, wherever we are. It's about keeping life simple and avoiding unnecessary complexity, as complexity hinders execution. This mantra applies to any situation. When resources or opportunities change, refer back to this mantra. It will shed light on three behaviors that undermine performance, productivity, and fulfillment: blaming, complaining, and making excuses. To become a high performer in any area of life, we must eradicate these negative behaviors and embrace an attitude of extreme ownership. Even if we can't control external circumstances, we always have control over our response. Taking full accountability for our actions is a prerequisite for achieving high performance. Instead of pointing fingers or blaming others, high performers focus on finding solutions to problems.

In conclusion, the key to achieving high performance lies in focusing on mastering the basics during the unseen hours and eliminating blaming, complaining, and making excuses. By consistently putting in the effort and maintaining a positive attitude, you can let the chips fall as they may and experience the success you desire.

Additionally, it's essential to have a crystal clear vision of the person you want to become twenty years from now. Time is unpredictable, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Therefore, it's crucial to ensure that the future version of yourself is physically, emotionally, and mentally fit, with a strong and loving connection to your family and meaningful work in service to others.

To align your present decisions with your future aspirations, evaluate each choice based on whether it brings you closer to or further away from becoming that person. Strive for as many "yeses" as possible, as the decisions you make today will shape your future. By using this filter to guide your decision-making process, you can design the life you desire. Remember, good decisions lead to a good life, while great decisions lead to a great life. Your choices will ultimately determine who you become and what you achieve along the way.

Now, armed with these insights and strategies, go forth and unleash your full potential. Embrace the commitment to mastery, eradicate negative behaviors, and align your decisions with your future vision. The path to high performance is within your grasp. It's time to seize it and create the life you've always dreamed of.
