Learning To Pray

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." Luke 11:1

If you know me, then you know asking for help doesn't come easily. Just ask my husband! While we may often prefer to tackle life's challenges like a desk from IKEA – solo, with careful consideration and adjustment – parenting is an entirely different ballgame. Shaping souls doesn't follow the same set of instructions; it calls for prayerful collaboration between us as well as help from above. Asking for aid isn't easy because our pride can get in the way - but being open to receiving assistance allows us greater strength when venturing into unknown adventures together!

When our paths become uncertain, and the fog of life's difficulties descend upon us, we realize it is in these moments that prayer presents itself as a beacon from which to find our way. In learning to pray with sincerity comes an acceptance-the recognition that real strength does not come from within ourselves but through humbly relying on God for help. Asking for guidance through prayer is an acknowledgment of our human limitations - a humbling realization of how much more powerful God is than us. It's something each person needs to practice regularly so as not to get carried away with trying seem independent while actually being helpless beneath insurmountable tasks ahead.

I love that the disciples went to Jesus and said, "Teach us to pray." For years, I read that verse as if it said, "Teach us how to pay". As mothers, we often find our mission to be daunting and overwhelming. It is only natural that Jesus' disciples would recognize this too when they went to him asking for help - not just in learning how to pray but also why it was important before anything else. This simple request provides an invaluable reminder; if ever life as a mother becomes difficult or uncertain, the best place to turn first should always be prayer.

As mothers, we can take comfort in the fact that prayer gives us a remarkable strength. Though our decisions may not always be perfect and there are so many things out of our control when it comes to raising children, praying bolsters us with great power - both physical and spiritual.

Even during challenging times, God's magnitude and wisdom are greater than any obstacle we might face. His love is limitless and incomparable - so turn to Him in faith when you or your children feel weighed down by life’s circumstances. Take heart; trusting in the Lord will lift the burden from your shoulders.

Heavenly Father, we are constantly in awe of Your limitless wisdom and power. Teaching us to be ever-dependent upon You is a kindly act that reminds us how much we need your help. Please grant me the grace of humility so I may always turn to you in prayerful adoration. Amen!

Questions to consider:

Are you relying too heavily on yourself, instead of letting God take the lead? What areas in your life could use more faith-based guidance and trust?

How can trusting in God's character empower you to raise your children with confidence?
