Feasting with a Purpose: The Transformative Power of Hospitality

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling -1 Peter 4:9

Living in our diverse city, one of the joys we relish is the rich tapestry of global cuisine. Exploring new flavors is a frequent delight, but equally, we find immense joy in welcoming others into our home, sharing not only food but our hearts with those we hold dear.

Have you ever noticed that Jesus, too, cherished the beauty of a shared meal? His life is peppered with instances of breaking bread, engaging in conversations, and offering hospitality. In Luke 5:27–31, we see Him dining with tax collectors; in the home of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38–42), He shared a meal. Remarkably, He even invited Himself to Zacchaeus's house for dinner (Luke 19:1–10). For Jesus, a shared meal was more than sustenance; it was a pivotal moment for mission in God’s kingdom, a demonstration of love and service.

Consider this: the mission to impact the world can start right from the heart of our homes. Throughout the Bible, hospitality emerges as a primary way for Christians to open their hearts to others. Following this example, we open our homes not to impress, but to serve.

As we extend hospitality to neighbors, friends, or coworkers, God may use these simple acts to help others open their hearts to Jesus. This ordinary practice has the extraordinary potential to let God work wonders!

Dear Father, grant me the willingness to open my home with love and a heart ready to serve others. May I find peace, knowing that perfection is not a prerequisite for Your presence to fill our space. Use the simplicity of sharing a meal to bring about extraordinary differences in the lives of those who gather with us. In Jesus' name, amen.
